BIDDING PRINCIPLES AFTER A 1NT OPENING
-- Jacoby followed by a jump raise to game in the indicated suit
is a slam try, balanced hand, strong suit. Use Texas if not
interested in slam. With a weakish suit, start with Stayman. With
an unbalanced hand use Stayman, UHC, or jump immediately.
-- Notrumper cue bids do not apply when responder has shown a
balanced hand. Cue bids opposite a balanced hand say, "Need help
here."
-- Texas transfer applies in competition, but only through 3C.
-- When responder makes a transfer bid, then jumps in a new suit,
the jump is a splinter bid--a slam try that implies a strong suit.
-- After a strong jump takeout response, 4NT by responder is Roman
Key Card Blackwood. To make a natural raise, transfer and then bid
4NT.
-- After a splinter bid in support of a minor suit, 4NT by opener
is natural, a sign-off, but 4NT by the splinter bidder is Roman Key
Card Blackwood (Exclusion Blackwood, if 4NT immediately follows the
splinter bid--see chapter BLACKWOOD in the book "Strong Bidding."
-- After a splinter bid in support of a major suit, 4NT by either
partner is Roman Key Card Blackwood.
-- When a major suit has been agreed, explicitly or implicitly,
4NT is Blackwood.
